SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The businesses under the Malandela’s umbrella are committed to the community and express social responsibility in many different ways. Some of the projects are described below:

GONE RURAL

Gone Rural founded a non-profit company, Gone Rural boMake, dedicated to supporting the lives of rural Swazi women, their children and communities through extensive health and education programmes, leading to the fulfilment of basic human and women rights.

Gone Rural boMake’s activities are carried out within the 13 groups of 700 women artisans of Gone Rural and positively impact the women, their dependents and the community.

Gone Rural boMake facilitates and implements the following programmes: HIV/AIDS Awareness, Advocacy Training, Women Literacy, Food Security, Water, School Fees Bursaries, Youth Entrepreneurship and a mobile library.

boMake is also  involved in Gone Rural’s effort to turn the groups into cooperatives that will act as a micro finance pool, offer savings funds and micro-credits for the women who will eventually own shares in the company.

MALANDELA'S
Moya Centre began as a small community centre offering basic health care and educational & psycho-social assistance to orphans and vulnerable children.

Peter Thorne (the owner of Malandela’s Farm and one of the founding trustees) and his family provided servitude of usus of 1 acre of their for the development of Moya Centre pre-school and health care facility.

The development of Moya has led to initiating various workshops to address the needs in the community. Workshop topics include:

  • Workshops focusing on HIV/AIDS,
  • Training workshops focusing on teaching other NGOs how to teach Home Based Care
  • Asking nurses from the Ministry of Health to share their knowledge on common medical problems, i.e: Tuberculosis, Sugar Diabetes, and the importance of good nutrition & diet to enhance the immune system.
  • Workshops for school committees on financial skills & sensitization to OVCs situations.
  • Additional workshops for all teachers are held focusing on psychosocial skills, group work & basic literacy with relevant text books for the children supplied.

Moya provides primary health care and distributes vitamins and supplements twice a week. The emphasis of this clinic is focused on nutrition, general hygiene and sexual lifestyle choices.
